Nintendo fans in Japan looking to play the Nintendo Switch 2 in a language other than Japanese are in for a bit of a hassle. A Japanese Language System (Japan Only) version of the Nintendo Switch 2 will be launching on Thursday, June 5, while another Multi-language system will also be available exclusively through the My Nintendo Store. The Japanese only base system will release for ¥49,980 (roughly $334 USD) while the Multi-language system will retail for ¥69,980 ($467.54 USD). Just as the naming suggests, the Japan Only system will only support Japanese and Japanese My Nintendo Accounts. The Multi-language system will support 16 different (unspecified) languages. The current Nintendo Switch supports 12 languages.
*UPDATE* As of Friday, April 4, the lottery process has begun over on the My Nintendo Store. This will remain open until April 16 at 11:00 a.m. Results will be sent out in the afternoon of April 24.
Pre-orders open up in Japan on Thursday, April 24 via lotteries on the My Nintendo Store online and at retailers across the country. More details about entering the lottery on the My Nintendo Store will be shared in the afternoon on Friday, April 4. In order to apply for the lottery at the My Nintendo Store (as detailed in the tiny text on the Switch 2 homepage), you must meet the following conditions:
- As of Friday, February 28, 2025, you must have played Nintendo Switch software for at least 50 hours (excluding demos and free software).
- You must have been a Nintendo Switch Online member for at least a year by the time of entering the lottery and still be an active member.
- If you are part of a Family Plan, only the purchaser of the plan is eligible.
- Only those whose country/region Nintendo Account is set to Japan may enter.
If you are living in Japan and are looking to play Switch 2 in English, outside of purchasing a console from your region of choice, your options are super limited, especially if you do not use a Japanese Nintendo Account.
