The first big release of 2025 from Nintendo is here today, Thursday, January 16, with the release of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. Released as Donkey Kong Returns HD in Japan, this Returns HD is an high definition remaster of the original title that came out on the Wii in late 2010 and Nintendo 3DS in mid-2013. In addition to the updated visuals, this HD version also gives players the option to play an “Original Mode” that is in line with the difficulty of the original (players start out with two hearts) and a “Modern Mode” that starts players out with three hearts and more access to items to make the game easier. Returns HD features over 80 levels across multiple worlds and also includes stages that were added to the Nintendo 3DS version of the game.
While Retro Studios was responsible for the original on Wii and Monster Games (Excite Truck, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D) on 3DS, Nintendo partnered with developer Forever Entertainment (Panzer Dragoon, House of the Dead Remake) for the Switch version of Returns.
