In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Tetris, the Nintendo R&D1 developed Tetris is set to hit Nintendo Switch Online on December 12. The game will be released in English speaking territories as well as Japan. The release was previously teased during the unveiling of Tetris Forever back in late August of this year. You can see some screenshots of the NSO version below.
Tetris has a complicated history with releases in the late 1980s. In Japan, a Famicom version developed by Bullet Proof Software was released solely in the country in 1989. In North America, Atari released a version of the game under the Tengen label in 1989, which was ousted out of the market when Nintendo acquired the license for Tetris. The release of Nintendo’s Tetris on Nintendo Switch Online is the first time the version has been released since it originally came out.
