Nintendo World Championships: Famicom Edition - Special Edition | Showcase

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition was shown off to the world in May 2024. The game harkened back to a similar collection from Nintendo’s past, NES Remix. While things are a bit different with the new title, Nintendo is going all out with the release with a Special Edition in all regions. But, gamers in Japan got something a little extra and we’re going to share all about that with you. Let’s get into it.

Background
Although the reveal of Nintendo World Championships for the Switch might seem kind of like a random decision, the game is actually the culmination of a year’s worth of promotion for the Famicom in Japan. Starting in July 2023, Nintendo started a year long campaign celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Famicom in Japan. The campaign offered a number of different Famicom related activities for fans online, such as polls, videos featuring Japanese personalities, quizzes and more. There was even SOMETHING planned for the now canceled Nintendo Live Tokyo, but we’ll likely never know the exact details.
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, or Famicom Sekai Taikai, is the climax of this year long celebration. Ironically, the nostalgia that many North American fans feel for the World Championships of old are likely lost on fans in other regions.

The Set
The Japanese set differs in numerous ways from what gamers are getting in English speaking territories. For starters, the outer box is quite different, with the Japanese versions featuring Japanese lettering and a slightly different shape. The included post cards all feature the original Japanese art (7 Famicom, 6 Disk System) and the pin set is by and large the same. Not included with the Japanese version is the gold replica cart. As a separate note, a standard version of the game can be picked up physically in Japan. If you opt to pick this up, English language is supported.
Some of the Special Editions in Japan come with just game, pins and postcards, however, the most publicized version of the set comes with a pair of Famicom Joy-Con. That is the the set that I picked up from My Nintendo online.
Famicom Controllers
Just like the NES controllers in the West, Famicom controllers have been available from My Nintendo since 2018. In terms of functionality, these special Joy-Con are mostly the same, giving gamers a form factor that is very faithful to the originals. The main difference with the controllers set is that the Famicom second controller contains a microphone. Although this wasn’t used in many games, Nintendo did make use of this features in a few titles, including The Legend of Zelda and Kid Icarus. We did a few videos on these in the past, so for more details, be sure to check those out.

Conclusion
As with a number of their collector’s edition of Switch games, Nintendo has delivered yet another hit, especially with the inclusion of the Famicom controllers. They are a perfect addition to make an already cool collector’s edition even better.

But let’s turn things over to you. Did you pick up Nintendo World Championships? Did you get the Special Edition? What region? What do you think of the game? As of right now, I’ve been too busy fumbling around with this special edition but am looking forward to playing once I finish up this look at the Japanese Special Edition. At any rate, sound off with any and all comments down below. We’d love to hear from you!
