Aonuma’s First Game as Director, Marvelous and More Hit NSO Retro

An eclectic selection of four Super Famicom titles hit the Nintendo Switch Online Super Famicom service in Japan today, Friday, April 12. One of the more notable titles for fans in Japan was Marvelous: Mōhitotsu no Takarajima (Another Treasure Island), which originally released on the Super Famicom in 1996 and was later brought to the Wii U Virtual Console in February 2014. This 1996 Nintendo developed top down adventure/RPG is significant in that it was the first game directed by Eiji Aonuma.

Wrecking Crew ’98 is also a significant release for the service. The title originally saw life exclusively in Japan on the Nintendo Power system. Not to be confused with the American magazine of the same name, Nintendo Power in Japan was a game distribution service set up at Lawson convenience stores from 1997 until 2002. After purchasing a Super Famicom Memory Cassette (which could be had for ¥3,980), players were able to purchase and save games to these carts from dedicated kiosks. After the service at Lawson ended, Nintendo offered the ability to purchase games for the platform via a mailing service that ran until later February 2007.
