Mario Kart 8 has lasted longer in the limelight than most expected. The game originally released on the Wii U in May 2014. The game was then re-released on the Nintendo Switch on April 28, 2017 as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Both versions proved popular, becoming the best selling games on their respective platforms. The original release is the number one selling title on the Wii U at 8.46 million units sold, while the Switch version has eclipsed 55 million units and still counting. The Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Pass was announced in early 2022, nearly five years after the initial release on Switch, and has since doubled the amount of courses available in the game.
