The Super Mario Bros. Movie has had a breakout start during its opening weekend in Japan. Distributor Towa Toho announced that from the April 28 (the release date) to April 30, the movie raked in ¥1,842,783,160 (roughly $13.41 million USD) in just the first three days. This is higher than the three day opening for previous Illumination films Despicable Me 3 (2017, ¥751 million) and The Secret Life of Pets (2016, ¥984 million). With the fourth day sales are factored in (May 1, ¥339.58 million), the film has already surpassed ¥2 billion total in Japan.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie hold’s the three day opening record for Universal films in Japan. The previous record was set by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018 with opening weekend earnings of ¥1.51 billion.
