Video Streaming Service Abema Hits Switch in Japan

While there is definitely a lack of video streaming services on the Nintendo Switch, gamers do have a few options thanks to YouTube, Hulu, Funimation and the Japan only Nico Nico Video. Well, we can add another service to the library with the release of the Japan only app, Abema. Available for free on the Japanese eShop starting on December 23, Abema has TV programs, movies, anime and live TV. While much of the content is available for free, some shows and movies require a subscription to Abema Premium, which runs ¥960 ($8.39 USD) per month.

Upon opening the app, you'll be greeted with some live TV. You can cycle through a number of different channels by using the joystick. At the top of the screen, you can check out on demand content, a TV schedule, a search option, a favorites list and settings. You can see a few screen shots taken on the Switch below.
Abema TV can be viewed outside of Japan, though some unspecified restrictions may apply. It should be noted that some western movies are available, but only with Japanese dubs. You can download the Abema app via the online portal here
